This may be a consideration if you already have a pet.

What kind of Dog Do I Want?
Sporting
Breeds
Bred to hunt with man. Trainable, active, and happy. Untrained, they may chew, run and can be as sensitive as a brick.
Hounds Use eyes and nose to pursue game animals. Active, friendly, and comical dogs. Untrained they may chew, howl, and be very hard to housebreak.
Terries Created to hunt down and kill vermin. They are often feisty, lively, and self-assured. Untrained they can be aggressive, barky and disobedient.
Toy Dogs Bred to be companions. Sweet, smart and devoted. Untrained can become snappy and hard to housebreak.
Working
Dogs
Intelligent, trainable and territorial. With direction, experience and activity they make first rate companions. Untrained they can be aggressive and disobedient.
Herding
Dogs
Similar to working dogs. With direction, experience and activity they make first-rate companions. Untrained they have a Tendency toward shyness and nipping at heels.
Puppy or
Adult
Adult dogs are the best-kept secret of dog ownership. Most adult dogs bond quickly to their new homes. Adult dogs can arrive in your home with little or no adjustment period. Pups can be a lot of fun, however do require a considerable amount of time and patience to be trained.
First-time owners should stay away from the
tough, territorial breeds.
